Windows 98SE Upgrade to Windows XP

Guest

I have a P4 1.6G computer with 256k memory. I recently had my computer wiped and upgraded from Win 98SE to Windows XP Pro and also had a new video card installed. After the installation, everything in the computer seems to be running very very slowly. Load times are taking an incredibly long time to do the simplest tasks (ie. Just opening Word). Programs and games now either do not seem to be working or runs at what seems to be half the speed as before.

I would appreciate any thoughts or solutions in this matter. Please help

Thanks.

If you connected to the Internet without a firewall in place and your
computer patched for protection against the latest worms, it is
probable that you are already infected. Here are standard
troubleshooting steps for XP:

1) Scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run the latest
CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html. Always
read the instructions before running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info - 5) look in
Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches; 7) run a firewall.

XP will run slower than 98, but not 50% slower. You have some other
problems. If XP was installed as an upgrade, look in Add/Remove for the
uninstall XP option and return your system back to 98.
Your system specs look good for upgrading to XP, but make sure you check the
OEM or Motherboard manufacturer web site for the latest BIOS updates related
to XP upgrades. Apply all BIOS and other updates
Sometimes the original OS when properly configured working properly is
better than upgrading to XP.
I find the purchase of a new system with XP installed on XP compatible
hardware and software to be a much smarter upgrade course. The cost of
upgrading a 98/Me system is much more than the purchase of the XP OS. You
will need to upgrade a good bit of your software and purchase obsolete
memory that cannot be used on future systems.
For essentially the same price, you can get a system with double the specs
and with a very small cost set up a network with the old system and the new.
