I have acquired a computer which had widows xp preloaded and have
decided I'd prefer to stay with windows 98SE.
Anybody know how to load windows 98SE when windows xp is already on the
computer?

Stick to XP - there are NO security updates any more for earlier
versions of windows!

XP is a lot better than 98 anyway.

Do not be afraid of change. It truly is much better.

Your choice of course, but unless the computer is underpowered for XP, I
think it's a very poor choice.

Anything new is strange and uncomfortable at first. If you would give
Windows XP a chance you would very likely find out that it's greatly
superior to Windows 98.

Just as you would in almost any other circumstance. Format the drive, and
install Windows 98.

And how do I format the drive again?
Its a long time since I last did it and don't quite remember which disk
I need to use to do it.

I tried to delete Windows XP and now the only screen which comes up is
one requesting I register or shutdown.

I have a w98Se boot disk but that isn't the one to use to reformat, is
it?

Go to your hard drive's web site and download the floppy for
reformatting your hard drive.

Do you mean go to my pc's website -- a harddrive can come from anywhere
-- and download some software?
What software do I download?

The Windows 98 setup floppy installs all the tools that the OP needs to
clean off the hard drive, create a new partition for Windows 98 and format
said partition for installation use.

Why would you think he has to get anything from the hard drive manufacturer?

Let's see, partitions?

No, from the hard drive's web site. You can either open the case and
look or right click on My Computer/Properties/Hardware tab/Device
Manager/Disk Drives and look there. If you don't want partitions, then,
as Mr Urban points out, your Win98 floppy will do the trick.

Hi Carole,

At one time I spouted my hatred of XP, and loved 98.But what the others have
been saying about security, among many other things, make XP superior.

After "inheriting" a machine with XP Pro already on it, I decided to give it
a chance, and I'm glad I did.

Why would you want to go back to windows 98 SE. The graphics and security is
improved also even just reformatting windows xp you do not require a lot of
work to do it as the windows xp more or less does it itself. No need for a
floppy as well.

If you want to go back in time, then your should work just fine. Just make
sure your window 98 SE is in the cd drive and follow the prompts of the
floppy for installation. Make sure you type c:/format to format you computer
while in dos. Once format is completed, type d:/startup and let your windows
98 SE whirl. Good luck. I believe that how it worked. It's been so long
since I formatted a computer to install windows 98.

Carole:
As others who have responded to your query have suggested -- unless your
hardware is inadequate to support the XP OS or you have some special
software that's simply not designed to work with XP and no upgrade is
available -- it really would be best (for a whole host of reasons) to stay
with XP. However, ...

If you're really set on installing Win98 to replace the present XP OS on
your PC, you will have to remove the latter OS as indicated by Ken Blake,
i.e., formatting the HDD containing the XP OS and then installing the Win98
OS.

You can use your Win98 floppy boot disk to accomplish this. The process is
relatively simple in terms of formatting the HDD but understand that you
will most likely need drivers specifically tailored for the Win98 OS in
order for the system to boot and function without problems. So think very
carefully before undertaking this step.

Anyway, if you do decide to go ahead with installing Win98...

1. Boot with the Win98 floppy boot disk and select the Minimal Boot option
(4th choice).
2. At the A:\ prompt type format c: and press Enter.
3. Answer Y after the warning message to proceed with the format.
4. Install the Win98 OS.

And that's about it. I'm assuming that if you go this route you just want to
have a single partition on your HDD. If you desire multiple partitions then
you would have to create these partitions (using the FDISK command) prior to
the formatting process.

But as you've been cautioned, don't be hasty about making this change. As
you have heard, the XP OS is superior in all kinds of ways as compared with
Microsoft's previous operating systems. I think you'll be comfortable with
XP after gaining some day-to-day experience with this OS.

This was a bad idea. What are you thinking? Where is your Windows 98

I don't use graphics much and have got grisoft antivirus and firewall.

Finally I am installing W98SE. Hey, I might go on to XP some time in
the future, but for now I'm happy with 98SE. (Actually I was happy with
W95 until it became obsolete)

There were a few tricky bits, like holding down the F8 key while
rebooting with some disk somebody gave me once, like removing the NSFP
(sp?) partition that goes with Windows XP redoing it with FDISK, also
typing help to access the "readme.txt" file. All a bit tricky but am
getting there. Thanks for the help.
