windows 98/XP local network

I've got a laptop with windows XP and a USB cable modem and a desktop with
Windows 98. I wanna connect both computers through Ethernet. I've already
got everything figured out: the RJ-45 wire conected, both IP's and default
gateway set up (IP1 (XP): 192.168.10.1, IP2 (98): 192.168.10.2 and the
typical 255.255.255.0 for the gateway). But the conexion incon on the
taskbar is showing the red cross saying that the netwire is not connected.

What am i doing wrong? I don't know, I don't understand, please, help.

Thanks a lot.

If you are connecting NIC to NIC, you must use a "crossover" cable. Are
both computers in the same workgroup? If you want to share the internet you
need to install ICS on the computer connected to the cable modem. Your IP
addresses should be 192.168.0.x and 192.168.0.y with the subnet mask you
are using (255.255.255.0).
