Windows 98 reappearance after upgrade to XP

After upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home on a 4 year old Compaq
laptop for some reason it boots up in Windows 98. Can anyone explain the
cause of this and how to fix it?

Are you sure it is booting to Windows 98 and you do not just have it set to
Classic settings?
Right click My Computer and click Properties.
What does it say under System?

If Windows 98 was upgraded to Windows XP, normally there is an option in
Add/Remove Programs to unstill Windows XP and revert to Windows 98.
If in fact you are back to Windows 98, you or someone else most likely used
that option.
If that is the case, you will need to upgrade to Windows XP again if that is
what you want
