Windows 95 on Windows XP

You COULD install it (Win95) on a separate hard drive but
if the hard drive containing XP is setup with the NTFS
file system, you won't be able to see any of the files on
the NTFS drive (from Win95) without a 3rd-party program
(freebies available, search Google).

Also you'd have to designate in the BIOS which drive to
boot from whenever you wanted to change from one to the
other (XP or Win95).

This is the "cleanest" way (to me) because there's NO
overlap between the two operating systems.

What are you trying to accomplish ?

Good Luck !

Does Windows 95 Install onto a Computer with Windows XP Home Edition on it??
The problem isn't trying to get the two operating systems to work together.
The problem is trying to get windows 95 to run on a computer designed for
Windows XP. I tried installing Windows 95 on a homebuilt computer with a 2.6
GHz Pentium 4 processor and even with all the patches I could only get it to
run in safe mode. I finally had to break down and install Windows XP.

Download the 45-Day trial of Microsoft Virtual PC.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/

With it you can run every Microsoft O/S in it's own space.
If you install 95 and use networking, be sure to get AVG's
free Anti-Virus, which works with 95.

The only requirement is that your PC needs a fairly large
amount of memory. I've got a VPC (Virtual PC) for 95 in
a 64 Megabyte footprint and it runs fine. The beauty of
VPC's is that they do not require their own partitions or
dual-boot scenarios, etc. They work off a standard BIOS
configuration and work in almost every way as a stand
alone PC. The only caveat is somewhat limited hardware
support, mainly no USB capability.

Also, Windows Update still has the basic patches for 95
that makes it somewhat more secure.

1. Why would you want to do such a thing?

2. Most hardware that XP will work on (especially the newer hardware) may
not have Windows 95 drivers.

3. Most likely Windows 95 would not be able to use most of the resources of
the new computer as those resources did not exist when it was around.

Windows 95 is an old (now) but independent Operating system. You do not
install it 'on' another one. If you have reason to want to use it, you
would need to make a separate partition on the hard disk, using FAT 16
unless you had a copy of Win95 OSR2, and install into that, using a
separate boot manager to choose whether to boot that partition of the XP
one. That would need a tool like Partition Magic 8 or BootIT NG

What do you want it for? If to run an old program, first try using All
Programs - Accessories - Program Compatibility Wizard. Point it at the
program concerned and tell it to pretend to be Windows 95

If it is for something that *needs* an old system - probably because it
has 'real mode drivers' - I would not use Win95 anyway, but use Windows
98 (Second edition for choice). That needs to be installed in a
separate partition in the same way, but can use FAT 32 and is generally
more modern and stable
