I haven't had any luck downloading the 32bit version, after about 10%
it thinks I'm done. But I was able to get the 64bit version.

If you go the sanctioned route, rather than direct, it'll give you a
download manager app which may help. I've had the same experience you have,
but now have 32 bit coming in via the download manager--will see if it
helps, it is only at 7% so far. I've heard other say that Firefox with
various add-in download managers may help as well.

I did it through ie's download manager it wanted to install and it did it on
broadband about 40minutes

Wow - I'm at around 75% now on the 32-bit version. I've already burned 64
bit to dvd, and I've got three keys, so I'm set.

If you are using Vista to download the ISO then use bitsadmin.
Bitsadmin is like a download manager.

There is a version of Bitsadmin for Windows XP, it can be downloaded
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...76-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en

Open command prompt

To create a job, type:

bitsadmin /create Win7

To add a file, type:

bitsadmin /addfile Win7
http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/633118BD-6C3D-45A4-B985-F0F
DFFE1B021/EN/7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.i
so
"c:\whatever\7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.i
so

To start the transfer, type:

bitsadmin /transfer Win7

When the Win7job is completed then type:

bitsadmin /complete Win7

Check status of download

bitsadmin /getstate Win7

bitsadmin /getbytestotal Win7

bitsadmin /getbytestransferred Win7

bitsadmin /getcompletiontime Win7

The dowload manager worked. I was able to install in VMware
workstation 5.5 using Vista Guest OS.

Great - writing from Windows Live Mail running under Windows 7 ultimate.

Upgraded 32-bit Vista to 32-bit Windows 7 on my main home desktop. So far,
the main casualty has been my HP all-in-one printer. Will look into that
this evening. Oh yeah--and Windows mail, which was my choice for newsgroup
work.

I think I am going to wait till windows 7 becomes beta 2 or rtm before I
try it even though I have it downloaded, let you all get the kinks out first
and I think I am going to run it on virtual pc once I up my memory to 3gigs.
I have 2igs now

To tell you the truth, it's been awhile since I used virtual PC. I need to
get it installed on my desktop which has the ram and the disk space to run
it. As I recall, you need to create the disk first--pick how big you want
that to be--look up what the minimum is for Windows 7. Your guess sounds
good to me for setting the ram size. I did read one response from somebody
that setting ram lower made for better performance, counterintuitively. I'd
try setting it to whatever is the minimum spec--you can change these
settings, I believe.

well I set it to 1024mbs but the host (which is vista home premium sp1) said
it did not have enough memory to run so I set it for 996mbs and windows 7
loaded up.
I just ordered online from Dell another gig so I will be able to up the
memory to the 1024mbs and keep 2 gigs for vista.
actually it is not that slow (unless I put it in full screen mode- which I
will again do once I get the memory) and I was able to install avg free 8.0
on it and actually do a scan. Some have tried avira but it will not work
but avg does.
Today I will fiddle with it some more, I basically want to learn the changes
from vista to windows 7, if I wanted to load more programs on it I would
have to get more memory and for that it is not worth it besides this
computer can only hold 4gigs of memory.
I like going virtual because when Microsoft decides to do beta 2, I can just
delete this one and do a new one.

If anyone else wants to try Microsoft virtual PC 2007 it is not hard to
install and I searched online sites that show you how to install it on vista
but if you are not running vista you can install it on xp pro. On vista
home premium it will say it is not supported but it does run fine just
ignore the prompt. Once I installed virtual pc I just followed the guide I
found online on how to install a virtual machine and add windows 7.
It is amazing watching it install and reboot. this is my first time using
virtual pc and I am in total awe.

these are some of the sites I went to get help\

http://www.ditii.com/2009/01/13/how...with-virtual-pc-2007-sp1-guide-tips-tutorial/

so off I go to play with it

I agree this is important technology and well worth getting comfortable
with. (I've got it installed now, but haven't had time to build any virtual
machines yet.)

when you put on the vm additions let me know if you have sound
I have sound on logon and logoff but no sound anywhere else and I cannot
figure out why
if you do maybe we can go over some settings together and I can figure out
why

Has anyone been able to install the VM Additions? I tried it several
times, but I don't see anything getting installed. After each Win7
restart I get a prompt that the VM Additions are not installed. ???

B

Bill Sanderson

Ahh-but what guest OS? Since I am running Windows 7 on the HOST, I wasn't
planning to install it in a VPC...

Probably I will run XP, not sure what else.
