On my son's computer when he boots Windows 2000 he gets
the message:

"NT5INF.CAT on Windows 2000 prof CD rom is needed. Type
the path where the file is located"

However the file does not seem to be present on the CDROM.

Is it possible this file is from a Windows Update and
won't be on the old CDROM?

If that's not the problem perhaps someone could tell me
how to boot to DOS and he can reformat his C: drive and
reinstall Win2K

Thanks

Lorne - the nt5inf.cat file is on the W2k CD but is compressed.
You will find it named nt5inf.ca_ in the \i386 directory. If you tell
the system the path to the CD's i386 directory the system may expand it
and be satisfied; if not, you'll have to expand it yourself. From a
command prompt, type
expand /?
to see how. Make sure you tell the expander to name the file
nt5inf.cat

The standard way of re-installing Win2000 (if you must go
down this path) goes like this:

- Instruct your BIOS to use the CD drive as the primary boot
device.
- Pop in your Win2000 CD
- Reboot the machine

The setup process will now start automatically.
