Windows 2008 Adprep

Has anyone come across any issues in running the windows 2008
adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep on a windows 2003 domain controller
as part of upgrading domain to windows 2008. We are planning on doing but I
think its just a matter of running the commands.

Also is this something we can do during working hours, will it cause any
outage of any anything. Or is it best to do during off peak hours like non
production hours.

No outages on the DC site but I would wait with running the commands for
non-business ours.

You're extending the current directory schema so you should prepare
yourself (have a current backup) and maybe try this on a test machine.
It is advisable that you take the Schema master offline (or disable
outgoing replication for the time) and do the schema update in an
isolated manner. Once everything is working well, you replug it to the
network (and enable rep again).

Distributing the Schema changes might take considerable amount of
network bandwidth as the Schema partition is shared between ALL DCs of
the forest. They will all replicate the changes in - prepare for that.
That is the reason I would wait for non-business hours before starting
the update.

Cheers,
Florian

Hello guv,

Will work without problems. Keep in mind to have allways an upto date backup,
before starting this kind of steps. We have done them allways during business
hours without any problems, no reboot is required. Just give time for replication
the schema changes, if you have a large environment, after /forestprep command
before starting /domainprep command on each domain.

Best regards
