Hello:

I have a Windows 2003 Server functioning in the role of a file server. This
morning it just up and rebooted for no apparent reason. The event log
records that the previous system shutdown was unexpected but nothing else.
I can't seem to find any reason for the reboot.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to trouble shoot this?

A sudden shutdown like this on a well-functioning machine when there has
been no recent software diddling (new driver, etc.) is often
hardware-related. Often it's a loosened or failing RAM stick, or a
signal that another device (possibly a hard drive) is beginning to fail
intermittently, or even a thermal problem - a fan somewhere is no longer
operating properly. It's also conceivable that a power interruption or
spike occurred - check that plugs are secure. Tiny vibrations over long
periods can add up.
