I am currently running ME. Can I install 2000 instead of
ME and not loose any apps or will i have to reinstall
everything.

You can do an upgrade from ME to 2000, but, you will find that anybody who
knows anything about upgrading never does it. Its best to do a clean
install and start from scratch. Upgrading can cause no end of problems.

You'll have to reinstall everything. W2K works best with a NTFS format and
ME uses FAT32

But you could always convert the file system afterwards using convert
from a CMD prompt.

eg

"
Converts FAT volumes to NTFS.

CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose
mode."

It's not technically possible to perform an upgrade from WinMe to
Win2K. You'll have to back up your data and start with a clean hard
drive.

Windows Me to Windows 2000 Upgrade Is Not Supported

Before proceeding, though, you'd better take a few minutes to
ensure that there are Win2K device drivers available for your PC's
specific components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically
designed for WinMe. Have you made sure the PC is capable of
supporting Win2K? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp). Also bear in mind
that computers designed for, and sold with, WinMe very often fail to
meet Win2K's much more stringent hardware quality requirements.

Many thanks for your advices confirms my suspicions; i
keep putting it off. I'll bite the bullet and do it over
Easter w/end.

ME was released AFTER Windows 2000 and thus is NOT in the "upgrade path"
from Windows ME. The prefered method is a HD format and clean install to
ensure a stable operating system. As such all apps will need to be
reinstalled also.

You're welcome.
