Windows 2000 Pro Paging Errors

Hi Guys, looking for some answers Re: Windows 2000 Pro SP4 paging error.

I have a customer's computer that has an error upon logging in, it presents
the error:

"Limited Virtual Memory

Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small.

1. Right-click My Computer, click properties, and then click the advanced tab.
2. Click on the Performance Options Button, and then click on the Change
button. Under drive [Volume label], select the drive you want.
3. To create a new paging file, click the Initial Size(MB) box, and then
type a paging file size
-Or-
To increase the paging file size, click the Maximum Size (MB) box, and then
type a larger paging file size.

When you have finished, click Set, and then click OK."

Now I have looked at posts concerning file permissions, and the user is a
member of the 'Administrators' group, and none other.
The file system is FAT32, so local file permissions should not be an issue.

The system has 256mb of RAM, and I have tried page file sizes of the
following:

1 - 512-1024
2 - 512-512

I have even tried deleting the pagefile.sys and rebooting, and sometimes it
fixes it for that reboot, but the 2nd time, sure enough, there it is again.

the hard disk has over 33gb free, so space is not the issue either.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and would allay my thoughts of
sending this PC to a watery grave.

Cheers!

If you were able to delete the paging file with Windows up and
running then it's an inactive paging file. Deleting an active paging
file is not possible. This suggests that your paging file is not where
you think it is. Have a look at
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\PagingFiles

Sounds like incorrect drive permissions. The "Everyone" group permissions
might have been removed from the %systemdrive% Make sure that the System
account (NT Authority) has full control of the %systemdrive% and or the
drive you're trying to put the pagefile on. My
Computer|Drive|File|Properties|Security|Permissions

The system account (nt authority) is the operating system's account and
needs to have full control of the drive(s) the pagefile exists on. The
system account is included in the "Everyone" group.

You can also try restoring default permissions.
