Windows 2000 PC hangs for 9 minutes after login

I've had this Windows 2000 PC for almost a year and have
had no problems. For the last two weeks the machine hangs
for 9 and a half minutes after logging in to my home
network, then works fine. I've done a complete Virus scan
with Symantec Antivirus after getting the latest Live
updates, and no viruses are found. I've disabled
everything in my startup using PC Magazine's StartUp Cop.
Nothing works. Here is exactly what happens:

1. Turn on machine
2. POST runs fine, Windows 2000 black screen runs fine
3. Windows 2000 splash screen runs fine, network connects
4. Windows Start .wav file plays and Login screen appears
5. type password and press Enter
6. Wait 9:40
7. Machine is now usable

During step 6, the cursor turns into an hourglass when I
hold it over the Taskbar. The cursor is a normal pointer
on the rest of the desktop. The hard drive read light
occasionally flashes during the 9:40, but mostly the
machine just sits there. Then it suddenly comes back to
life and works fine.

Any ideas???

What hardware and/or software have you installed in the last 2 weeks?
This is the first question I would ask. It's unlikely the problem
happened without something triggering it.

You could put a shortcut to taskmgr in the startup folder. As long as when you
last used task manager it was left with "Processes" showing, that's what you'll
see when the computer starts. It should be easy to see what is hogging the
processor.

This would be a good idea if I could get anything to
launch. After I click OK, the machine does nothing for
9:40, and THEN TaskMgr launched. As I said, I have
removed everything from startup and used StartupCop to
prevent even Registry-launched apps from starting.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm still searching for
the answer.
