Windows 2000 licenses

Hello everyone...

I was just wondering how do we decide on licenses. When I installed my 2000
server it asked me about Per Seat licenses and Per Server licenses... Default
was Per Server with 5 connections...

1. What is the difference between these..??

2. If I choose per server with 5 connections, is the first 5 free and does
it mean 5 concurrent connections or 5 client computers per server..??

3. Where can I obtain more licenses if needed..?? Can you plz give me a
link...

4. Can I use the CD keys that come with copies of windows as a license..??
Is this the same as Client Access License..??

I know it's Christmas and everything so I am not expecting quick replies but
if anyone knows a little bit to get me in the right frame of mind, please
write done whatever u know...

Thanx in advance and Merry Christmas to everyone who reads this...

Hello Cliff,

Thanks for the posting.

Firstly, let me explain what is per server and Per seat.

Per Server
==========
With Per Server licensing, a specified number of CALs are associated with a
particular server. The number of devices that can legally access that
server simultaneously is limited in Per Server licensing to the number of
CALs purchased for that particular server. For example, if your
organization chooses to deploy Windows NT Server in Per Server mode,
purchasing 50 CALs will allow up to 50 devices to be connected to that
server simultaneously. Because CALs in Per Server deployments are not
permanently associated with a specific device, if your organization adds
another Windows NT Server, and remains deployed in Per Server mode,
separate Windows NT CALs will be required to access the second server. With
Per Server deployments, the system administrator designates the number of
CALs that apply to the server during setup, based on the number that have
been purchased for that server

Advantage
A Per-Server license is most economical in single-server, occasional, or
specialty-use server solutions. Some examples include Remote Access Service
solutions, CD-ROM servers, or the initial server of a planned larger
deployment.

Per Seat
==========
With Per Seat licensing, any number of licensed computers and/or devices
can be used to connect to the server. However, you must purchase CALs for
each client computer and/or device where access to services is needed such
as file and print, or Microsoft server applications.

Advantage
A per-seat license is most economical in distributed computing environments
where multiple servers within an organization provide services to clients,
such as a company that uses Windows 2000 Server for file and print services.
