Windows 2000 Install Question

A

Aaron Hartley

I have a PC with windows 2000 installed on it and I wanted to do a
clean install. Complete re-format and install. However, I am running
into some problems.

Is the Windows 2000 Pro CD bootable? The NT CD was bootable. You
could just pop into a computer, power it up, and install. But my
computer seems to ignore the 2000 CD. With 2000 it would only install
if I ran the install program within my existing 2000 installation.
What is worse is that after re-booting I finally got to the screen
where I can create, delete, and install on partitions, I couldn't
delete the partition of my original install. The best I could do was
install over the current install, overwriting it. The partition was
not formated in the process and other directories and files that were
not part of OS but on the same partition are still on the partition
after the install. Granted I could delete the directories manually
but it seems that something I was once able to to do I should still be
able to do now. How do completely re-format this sucker? Is the CD
only bootable if there is no microsoft OS currently installed on the
machine?

Thank you.

You may need to set the boot order in cmos setup to CD-Rom, A, C. To do a
clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

One added note, if you do use the makeboot utility, make 100% sure
that the floppies that you use are 100% error free. On two occasions
I created these boot disks, on the first it would get stuck on the third
diskette, saying that it couldn't find file so-and-so and on the second
occasion it got stuck on the first, saying it could load the ntkernel. The
makeboot process did not alert me to errors creating the floppy.

Both cases turned out to be bad floppies.

Good luck!
