Windows 2000 I.E problem with tif files

Hi Everyone

I apologise for the OT. This is also actually on a windows 2000 workstation:

We have an application that works through java in I.E.
The people view faxes through this application using the windows default
image viewer.
On one workstation when you try to view the tif image, the it says
"Installing components" for a second in the status bar of I.E and then you
cant see the image. (It shows a block with a cross in it like the image does
not exist)
I have checked that the file association for tif's is correct and you can
open a tif that is saved on the workstation with no problem.
i honestly dont know where to go from here. It looks as though I.E is trying
to install software to view the image but it doesn't show where it is trying
to connect. Is there somewhere I can see this or a log of what I.E was trying
to do?
Can I force I.E. to view the image?
I have tried installing IRFan viewer to associate the file with something
else and you get the same result.
I have re-installed I.E. and everything.
I am desperate.
Thanks for you time

I'd suspect an issue with Java-runtime version compatibility. Compare the
runtime versions on the working and non-working machines.

BTW, it's quite common to find Java apps that won't work with the latest
runtime. Therefore updating may not necessarily be the required solution.
