Windows 2000 could not start, file is missing or corrupt

My W2K File Server cannot boot with the message
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt
\Winnt\System32\Config\System

No safe mode start is possible, I have no ERD disk...

Tried already w/out success:
-boot with setup floppies to use Repair/Manual Repair all
choices option.
-Repair/Fast option.
-Recovery console CHKDSK /C: /R

My installation CD is from universal subscription and does
not have the standard expected directories, and is not bootable

KBA 319011 mentions not to use a boot disk in this case??
Thanks - I really do not want to take out the hard disk,
but must have that data.

IF you can get into the recovery console copy the SYSTEM from the repair
directory into the config directory. Or use a parallel install.

Dear Richard

Thanks for your hint-will try.
One more question. System is on C:, the programs on D: and
the data on E: With a parallell install on C: will I still
be able to get to the data on E:?
