missing or corrupt ntoskrnl

The boot menu appears but then I get the following message;
"Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt...Ntoskrnl.exe"

I've read KB article 124550. I was only able to try "Method 1" (tried to
boot using a bootable disk). But I'm unable to use the other resolutions
because I don't have an ERD.

I am able to use the W2k CD to access Recovery Console. The boot.ini appears
to be correct. I am now running CHKDSK for lack of knowing anything better
to do.

I'm unable to open WINNT or any other directory. Shouldn't I be able to?
When I use LOGON command nothing seems to happen.
This problem started after the user shut down the system using the power
on/off button.

What else can I do?

Should I use an ERD created on a similar machine?
Could FIXBOOT help?

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

Sounds like a hardware problem, most likely the hard drive. Try running the
hard drive manufactures diagnostic program, which can be found at
www.majorgeeks.com, and look under Drive Utilities. Running the diagnostic
program would issolate or fix the problem, if it is the hard drive. Seagate
Seatools seams to run on any computer the best.
