It seems the problem occurs across a wide variety of partioning software
(google <partition ntoskrnl>) that the ntoskrnl is not seen all the time.
In my case, it happened when I took too long to chose a boot option because I
was distracted. Upon rebooting, the problem (missinf or corrupt ntoskrnl)
disappeared and everything went smoothly.
