Windows 2000 computer management

Why is it that in computer management under sessions / open files do some IP
addresses resolve to DNS names and others don't? IE:

DOMAIN\USER1 10.0.0.1 15
DOMAIN\USER2 LAP2 2
DOMAIN\USER\3 LAP3 10
DOMAIN\USER4 10.0.0.4 3

ALL clients connecting to this server are XP and there seems to be no
pattern as to which ones get resolved

They are not DNS names, they are NetBIOS names.

Maybe it just didn't resolve to the name at that moment in time. Different
conditions affect this based on NetBIOS' mechanisms. Are you running WINS?
If so, they should pretty much all show up as the NetBIOS names.
