Windows 2000 can't detect my cd drives properly

I have two cd drives which are listed as D and E. However in My Computer
they are listed as Compact Disc for both name and Type. If I put a cdrom in
either of them and try and access the cdrom I get a message that says Insert
disc and autorun doesn't work with installation discs. However if I start up
in Safe mode My Computer lists them by the correct name as CD -RW and the
type as CD Drive and I can access the files on the cdrom. What is happening
why can't Windows see them in Normal mode and let me open the files or
instal programs.
Anyone any ideas?

Check to see what Device Manager has to say about it. Also check Event
Viewer for errors.

My guess would be to check the drivers that are in use, safe mode uses only
basic drivers and it sounds like maybe you have a bad driver for one unit
when in normal mode. Also the BIOS on my Asus motherboard seems to get
confused if I have it set "Plug and Play OS = Yes" but set "No" is okay, so
who knows really. Have you just installed one of these devices or anything
like that?
