windows 2000 and windows nt

I just connected my windows 2000 server to my Windows nt domain. The W2K is a stand alone machine. I would like to install Active Directory and also have it become a Domain Controller. The NT domain it's connected to has a PDC that connects 40 users for file and printer sharing. How would promoting the W2K server affect the PDC and what precautions should I be taking? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Greetings --

Win2K servers can only be member servers in a WinNT domain.

To migrate an existing WinNT domain to a Win2K domain, the only
supported method is to first upgrade the WinNT PDC to a Win2K DC,
followed
by any BDCs.
