Adding Win2k Server to Win NT Domain

H

Hank

I have a Windows NT domain with a PDC and number of
BDCs. I have a Windows 2000 Server to add to the
domain. Can I plug it in and make it the new PDC
emulator and configure the DNS and Active Directory from
the boot up and still have it work on the old NT domain?

Thanks

The ONLY way to have a Win 2k DC in a NT 4.0 domain is as PDC emulator (by
upgrading the PDC first) or as a member server (no Active Directory
installed).

There is no way to have a NT 4.0 PDC and a Win 2k DC in the *same* domain,
unless you do something wrong like promoting a NT 4.0 BDC to PDC offline
then somehow add it to your Win 2k domain that was built from an upgraded NT
4.0 PDC.

The NT 4.0 PDC is the only DC in the NT 4.0 domain that holds the writeable
copy of the SAM. Adding a Win 2k DC or upgrading any other server will not
carry the NT 4.0 SAM into the new Win 2k domain, this will result in a
separate domain.

Here are a couple of links to the two main ways to move from NT 4.0 to Win
2k.
