Member Server On NT domain

M

Matthew Carter

I currently have an NT domain with a PDC and 2 BDCs. I also have a
2000 Server installed as a member server on the domain. I'd like to
turn on Active Directory on the 2000 member server, and have it keep
the domain SAM database. As I understand, the 2000 member server must
convert the domain over to a 2000 domain and emulate a PDC.

Is there a hitch here? Can I just turn on Active directory and run
through the wizard in this case, or is it more complicated? Or will my
NT domain implode when I promote the 2000 server to PDC and demote my
currect NT PDC to a BDC?

Thanks for any help you might have.

All I can suggest is that you have backed up everything first. If you have
another box to spare, you could build another NT server, as a BDC, get a
good synch (check with domain monitor), then turn off your PDC. Promote the
new BDC to a PDC. The original PDC box would be your failback domain, all
contained and safe should something go horribly amiss.
Good luck and godspeed!
