RC2 is out to public, not the final. It's really good though, absolutely no
problems.

It is NOT out to public at all.
It IS available via windows update IF you know how to do so.

Yes it is.

Under the heading "Brief Description":
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public

What part of that means it is NOT "out to public"?

So Microsoft is using their paying customers to test something and
people think this is a new thing? LOL! Vista wasn't ready to be released
and is now being tested by the hapless people who paid for the "privilege".

Can anybody give me a rational reason why anyone should download
and install this? Surely you do not allow MS to install every damn
update! Some, the percentage varies according to what version you
have and the apps on your system, are known to cause heartburn.
Thus, I am very selective and lurk here and other places for awhile
before installing updates. I'd guess my install percentage of the
total is 90-95%. So, I would never install SP3 because it'd install
all the stuff I already denied. And, like when I delayed SP2, I
waited until I had a new PC built and did a clean install, I am
very leery of doing an update that large over the top of a very
stable SP2.

So, what I'm interested in isn't "install everything, if MS didn't
think it was critical, they wouldn't offer the update" nor am I
interested in beta testing SP3 for free. What I AM interested in is
WHAT people think is important about SP3 and WHY they would risk a
system blow-down by a cavalier install without knowing and
accepting the risks. In other words, I'd would like a factual
explanation, if there is any.

Thank you.

There is simply no such thing as "no problems" with ANY software
release from ANY developer whether it is an O/S or application or
utility or driver or anything. Bug-free code is mathematically
impossible to create and today's go-go world of extreme
competition leads developers to rush releases out the door, the
early adopters, ala Vista, beta test on their Visa cards, etc.

Whether there are or are not problems with SP3 depends highly on
how your system is configured, what apps/utilities you have and
what versions, what hardware and drivers you've installed, and
what you do with your system. While I think that XP Pro is by far
the most stable O/S MS has ever produced, it is hardly 100%
stable or 100% problem free. That goes from the initial release,
SP1, and SP2 as well as the hundreds and hundreds of patches
released. Because I practice safe updating in a variety of ways,
my personal problems have been relatively few and minor but I do
not want to risk a visit from Murphy until I see a LOT of people
saying that SP3 is OK, and even then I doubt I'll every install
it.

And, you can take to the bank that I won't go to Vista at until
6-12 months AFTER SP1, and then only on a new PC certified to run
it.

You have succinctly summarized my philosophy! I will simply NOT
beta test ANY SW on my Visa card, not even an O/S free update! The
only kind of early adopter I could possibly think of that should
buy Vista right now is someone who MUST have it to support an app,
utility, or piece of HW correcty, e.g., an ultra-fast PC with a
quad-core processor that they want in excess of 4 gigs of memory
and some other things that XP can't or won't support.

Sure. Some devs and admins think it is important to test thier own software
and infrastructure against the current state of the service pack to identify
issues and plan for adoption after the release. Individuals have reasons
that are important to them. Everybody has a choice.

Pretty slim pickin's there. I especially like this "new functionality":
Offers more descriptive text to explain the settings and prevent
incorrect configuration of settings.

As an ex-coder, however, I do take exception to Mr. Mopar's assertion
that "Bug-free code is mathematically impossible to create."

I do not want to risk a visit from Murphy until I see a LOT of people
saying that SP3 is OK, and even then I doubt I'll every install it.

I downloaded and installed RC2 on a ThinkPad laptop I didn't mind
destroying--and a good thing too that it's the only system I installed it
on.

I had no error whatsoever reported during the install, but after the reboot,
I had no network. Both the onboard and wireless NICs were there and
reported just fine in Device Manager, but the networking applet didn't list
either of them. Didn't have too many option to try to fix this, so I just
removed it.

Then while I was running the uninstaller, I went to another (good) machine
and stumbled upon some post saying that installing RC2 on top of RC1 wasn't
a supported scenario. I can't say for sure whether this is to blame, but
that was definitely the case here.

I got some rather ominous-sounding warnings near the start of the
uninstallation process--it listed some software that might stop working,
hardware that might stop working (a list that included *every* single entry
under Device Manager)...but given that I didn't mind rebuilding that machine
from scratch, I just went ahead and let it do its thing anyway...and I gotta
say I was quite impressed at how it all went...it took a good while, and
after a couple of reboots, it took a good 10 minutes to redetect all the
hardware...went back to Windows Update and fetched maybe 3MB worth of
updates (that's all that was listed at that point)...and the system is back
up and running as solid as it was before (or so it appears on the surface,
at least).

That being said, when I find the time, I *might* try reinstalling RC2, now
that RC1 is gone and--in theory, at least--I'm back in an "SP2 state"...or
the SP3 RTM might be out before that. I can't say I'm in such a hurry to be
running SP3 that I *need* to try again now...

Release date is supposed to be March 24th. From a web site in France
that originally leaked the information, Vista SP1 was scheduled for
release on the 18th and this did happen. Nobody but Microsoft knows
for sure about the XP but so far it's 1 for 1. Hang tight or check the
Technet forum
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17
for current news.

It has not yet been released.

It will come through the normal Windows update or Microsoft Update.

Or, if you're smart, you'll order the free CD when it becomes available.
