window tabs not showing in taskbar

I can't get open windows & minimised windows to show their tabs in the
taskbar. They are not showing up in the taskbar at all! I have tried
changing the taskbar properties but with no success.
The only thing I did yesterday was to 'kill' a program and the desktop went
blank (all icons + taskbar disappear) for a while before it came back.
Can this be fixed?
