Ok not much works with this terrible OS but playing an MP3. now how
difficult can that be????

Ok open an MP3 and nothing. I can see title etc. so I look at Task Manager.
mfpmp.exe at between 75 and 50%. No sound.

WOW. Anyone have any ideas other than tossing this piece of crap that MS
has foisted onto the public.

Do you have sound with other programs?
Do you have the latest sound drivers, and latest WMP?
Does the mp3 play in other players, like Realplayer, IrfanView, Nero
ShowTime, Windows Media Center?

WMP 11.0.6000.6324 works fine on my Vista Home Premium.

I have problem where some MPG movies play at triple speed. Speed adjustment
is grayed out. Anybody know what that's all about?

Dave's response should likely point you in the right direction to get fixed
up.
Additionally, what sound card do you have?

Speed adjustment is just a temporary playback tweak.

How about other file types? Are those wonky too? If it's affecting other
file types, that might be one thing. If it's just MPEG, that greatly limits
suspects.

It is just MP3's.

What sound card do you have? Is there a driver update available?
If you turn off Enhancements on your audio card settings, does that fix it
up?
