Window Media Player 10.0 using Processor 98%

Please tell me how to fix this. When the media player starts playing, it
initially is using only 6 - 10% of processor. After only 30 - 60 seconds it
starts using over 95%. Could this be an internet access issue. WMP is
minimized and not running visualizations.
The computer is a 2 mHZ intel Pentium4 with a gig of ram. The OS is WinXP
SP2. Of course this problem interferrs with all other work on this pc
rendering it impossible to do anything with music in the background

no other processes like spyware or adware are executing and spbot s&d and
Adaware have been run.. Norton Antivirus has been run - system is squeaky
clean. The only process that is sucking up 98% of my processor is windows
media player. I'm trying to play mp3's that are on the hard drive.

I would open the plugins options in settings and see if any plugins are
running in the background. Disable any that are checked and try it again ..
if the problem persists then I would try downloading MP10 again and
reinstall over itself. One other question ... did you ever install a codec
pack like Nemo codec pack .. if so .. I would try uninstalling the codec
pack and again test media player
