Window Explorer

Is there a way to uninstall, then reinstall Windows Explorer? When I try to copy/paste, I get the error message:

Explorer.exe application error: Instruction at '0x77e7650d' referenced memory at '0x0460ffff'. The memory could not 'read'. What does this mean?

Thanks!

Post back to be sure you are running Windows XP, & whether Home edition or PRO.
Whether you have a full or retail version of XP CD (in case a repair install is needed).

No, you cannot simply reinstall Windows Explorer. It is a key component of Windows & absolutely needed in order to even be in Windows.

Be sure your RAM memory is not going bad. Run a memory-hardware diagnostic to check it out. (Ask if you don't know where or how).
It *may* be your RAM (some of it) is bad.

What is running when this error happens? What are you copying & pasting? Name of application program?
is your Windows otherwise ok?

Use XP's Event Viewer to get more detail on your "error".
Start button/ Run / type
eventvwr.msc<enter> --
or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.
Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred. Double click---the information may give a clue on the issue.

Get the entire entry info for this and write down & post back. Get all of it & make special note of Event ID number.

The application, C:\WINNT\explorer.exe, generated an application error The error
occurred on 01/17/2004 @ 19:36:29.319 The exception generated was c0000005 at
address 77E7650D (kernel32!GetWindowsDirectoryW

Which one of those had the time closest to your last problem? What program had you been running?
I think I remember you were "cutting & pasting". Explain a little how you are doing this.
Are you perhaps doing multimedia work?

Event 1002 translates to "The window cannot act on the sent message."

Event 4097 translates to "The system cannot find message text for message number 0x1001 in the message file for NETMSG."
