Hy,

no update notice yet? Strange.

Winamp 5.1
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp51_full.exe
5,86 MB

* New! Play aacPlus
* New! Rips CDs to aacPlus (Limited to 8x in free edition)
* New! AOL Radio featuring XM
* New! SHOUTcast Wire Podcast Directory
* New! Predixis MusicMagic Playlists

I have not tested this features, just from the webpage.
Dynamic playlisting with "Predixis MusicMagic" sounds interesting.

Regards,
Thorsten

My opinion:

I abandoned Winamp a long time ago. Compared with other alternatives, I
found the sound distorted. At one time, it was fun -- not when it got
corporate. And when AOL is involved, I run as fast as I can in the other
direction. Can they do anything that's not abusive?

My thumbs are down.

Richard, I have to agree with out 100 percent. However, there is a
streaming station that I love to listen to that has a URL beginning with
"vox:" I can't find an alternative player that will play those
streams.

Can you think of an alternative player? Because, like you, I would love
to dump winamp as quick as I can.

Thanks, and here's the streams complete URL:

Dunno.
What's "uvox?"
Are you at a university that maintains its own local network and local
addresses?
This won't load on my system. Never heard of it.

First, you need to know what language they're speaking (what codec).
Unfortunately, there's a Babel of codecs out there, with this guy and
that swearing that his is better than the others and You Should Use It.

Sorry: with this URL, my boat won't float.

But, always, take a close look at Media Player Classic -- it does a lot
of codecs; more with plugins.

Of course, each media player wants to establish a base of exclusive
content providers that will only work with that player. I don't
understand why any content provider will fall for that bunk unless
they're in the direct employ of the player. The true standards that I
can toss of the top of my head are:

Windows
Real (like it or not)
MP3 (proprietary, believe it or not)
OGG Vorbis (the best hope because it's open-source)

Hopefully, OGG will the the one that remains standing (note: Real has
adopted it at least in part -- watch this).

If you're a content provider, if you use an oddball standard, you can be
participating in a pissing contest in which you're the only player;
you're pissing against yourself, and there's no audience.

You may want to point this out to the content provider.

Not at any university. The URL is for a station in LA. KTWV.
That URL I provided DOES play using WinAmp 5.1 But, that's the
only player I've found so far that will play the stream.

Tried Media Player Classic. Won't play a "uvox".

You may want to point this out to the content provider.
Doubt if that will do any good. Station is owned by
one of those big conglomerates. My walls listen better!

Here is their website http://www.947wave.com

That format is available elsewhere. I checked the web site -- hard for
me to agree that Kenny G is "jazz." There are other stations that play
"smooth jazz." Perhaps one of them has a web site, isn't part of that
conglomerate, and streams in a more civilized format. I know that
there's a "smooth jazz" station here in the SF Bay Area -- forgot which
one it is.

My feeling is that for a content provider to use a strange proprietary
format is to shoot themselves in the foot. It's like saying that I go in
to the supermarket in Galveston, pick up my groceries, and then go to
the checkout stand and tell the clerk: "Ring me up. I only pay in Zlotys."

Good luck.
