What's all this advertisng about Winamp ? For some people, Winamp is too
complicated to want to download and/or use. It's interface is so
complicated, so what's its worth ?

I find Winamp very simple to use! It's also freeware so no problem with
it getting a mention.

Maybe you could mention some alternatives that you like better?

I personally switched to foobar2000 recently as it is fast to start and
doesn't require anywhere near as many resources as winamp.

I seem to recall that WinAmp became a product of AOL. If so, what's the
real price tag?

I still use Version 2.91 for its simplicity and size. But I also used
Freeamp [1] for some time as it was quite close to winamp back then, but
already featured completely customisable skins. Don't know how it's been
developed in the past couple years though.

When I first got started with Winamp, especially with WinME, it seemed
really difficult to navigate the GUI.

Hmm. It really isn't anymore to me. Of course, I bumped up to the XP
experience - if that could make a difference. I think it was just getting
used to the GUI - for me.

It's stayed free all these years, as well as free of ad-ware and spyware
(TIP: it's the plug-in's you have to watch out for!) unless you want to use
it to rip CD's, then you have to shell out some $, but they don't nag you
at all, and for internet radio (with a broadband connection - and I like
the "smooth" jazz Genre in the drop-down menu) and generally for playing
music, it seems to sound so much better and use fewer resources and less
memory.

Anyway, have a nice day.

It's still free. Unless you want to buy the pro version in order to
encode mp3s, but why bother? There's too many free rippers out there.

I used to hate Winamp until someone showed me the "double size" option.

This is an NG for advertising and searching for freeware. Winamp is
freeware. You do the math.

Although I don't think the WinAmp interface is perfect, it is better suited
to my use than any of the alternatives I have seen so far. And I have tried
several of the players frequently suggested in this group.

I personally switched to foobar2000 recently as it is fast to start and
doesn't require anywhere near as many resources as winamp.

I recently downloaded Winamp 5 for use with my iPod in Windows 98SE and I
found two serious deficiencies:

1) Winamp 5 free won't rip for spit

2) the CDDB link that ran so well with Winamp 2.x is dead, so labeling rips
is impossibly tedious

I have found alternative free rippers (darkeripper seems to work best,
although it seems to crash the sound driver after dealing with one CD).

I wonder if anyone here has found a single workable alternative that will
read an iPod, rip and linkup to a CD database (for free, natch) ...

TIA
