Here are the Errors listed in Manage, Application, the day of problem:
"Windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you on with the default
profile for the system"

Event ID: 1000
Windows cannot copy file C:\Documents and Settings\Default
User.WINNT\NTUSER.DAT to location C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator.DTB\NTUSER.DAT. Contact your network administrator.

Opening My Computer, shows no drives, but an error message:
"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this
page.
As a result, the page may not display correctly"

Removing the hard disk and viewing files on a separate machine turns up
documents OK.
Drives can be seen and explored in safe mode.
Admin user account shows in 'users'

Machine never part of domain.

How to restore this Administrator account? Or is it re-install time?
I am going to re install, ONLY cos I'm under the gun, and have imaged the
problem drive. Very curious though.
Previos event was an Auto oupdate.

The fact that you have \Default User.WINNT tells us a repair was performed
once before. Follow the steps in this article to replace a corrupt local
administrator profile.
