win2k upgrade from win98 - problem

I am trying to upgrade from win98 to 2k. it keeps getting
stuck on the same part.. it tries to install network
components, right towards the end, and then the computer
restarts itself... it wont finish. At first I just let it
run but it kept doing this for close to an hour and then
i just stopped it.

Now I cant seem to move forward or backwards. I dont know
how to remove what was already installed to go back to
98. 2k wont finish installing. i cant get my cd rom to
boot so i can try something else. I created a startup
disk on a friend's xp machine, and when i load with it, i
get error messages that it wont load the cd-rom drivers
and i cannot access my cd rom from dos.

any ideas???? I NEED HELP!!!

You cant roll back to Windows 98. What I would recommend is removing any
non-essential hardware from the machine (NIC, modem, sound, etc) and
rebooting the machine to see if the upgrade will complete. If not, you may
need to do a clean installation of the OS. Did the upgrade.txt happen to
list any conflicting apps/hardware?
