win2k start up

I just switched from win98se to win2k (hd reformatted)and
now on start up it locks up either 1/2 or 3/4 of the way
thru, any advice ?
 
Freeze on install or on start up of successfull install?
If successfull install can you start in safe mode?
If on installing you've run compatibility check? tried installing to basic
sys only, no extra hardware.
Its probably a driver problem.
