Hello -

I woke and tried starting my PC this morning and got a
LDRNT not found message and directed to hit any key to
restart. Well, nothing works and I can not get past
this. Restarted many times, and attempted to get into
safe mode, but nothing would work. Any ideas?

Do you have a floppy disk in your A: drive?

Rick

Nope...
The system has been acting funny over the past few days,
getting progressively worse - so I'm thinking maybe a
virus that went undetected?

Yeah, or a failing hard drive.

I do hear a bit of a whirring sound when the PC attempts
to start up. Any suggestions?

Backup your data and replace the drive ASAP. Better yet,
image the drive with Ghost or another utility so you won't have
to reinstall everything.

Sounds good...but I can't get into the PC. Each time I
turn it on, I immediately get the "LDRNT Failed to
load", "Press any key to restart" - over and over again.

A search on microsoft's support page doesn't turn anything
up on the LDRNT message.

Is the filename LDRNT instead of NTLDR? NTLDR is the loader
for Win2K, if it's saying LDRNT then you likely have a virus (and
the drive itself might be ok). In that case, boot off the Win2K CD
and try a "Repair" option.

Thanks for all your help Rick. It turns out I had the
letters turned around. It is NTLDR. If I create a boot
disk, that should let me in, right? Then I can back up
all my data and get a new hard drive. Or do you see
another option?

It really depends how far gone the drive is. If it's spinning up
then you should at least try a repair option as I mentioned earlier,
or go ahead and buy a new drive, install Win2K on it, attach
your existing drive as a secondary disk, and hope that you can
access it that way.

If it can't even spin up or is completely unreadable then your
options are a lot more limited... send it to a data recovery service
(very $$$) or just chuck it and start over.
