Win2k shutdown from keyboard - can I prevent this?

G

George Orwell

When I shutdown Windows 2000 from the start menu,
it spends ages shutting down.
However, if I press the "Power" key on the keyboards,
I see a little alert box saying
Windows is shutting down
for half a second, the power snuffs out.
Yet when I reboot, I don't get scandisk running, as I
would expect from such a rapid ending.
So is it okay to kill Windows by the keyboard?
But I wish to disable the Power key on the keyboard.
I went to control panel, and can't find anything
under the power or keyboard options.

Key remapping under win2k requires a registry edit. Google for
examples and you should find some tips on how its done.

I had a keyboard that had 'power' keys. I found it annoying when I kept
hitting them by mistake. The easist fix is to simply pry off the
keycaps. They just snap in on most keyboards.

is a link to a keyboard mapping tool from MS, looks to be quite
useful, requires dot.bloat to work tho.

Yes, as you can see "Windows" is shutting itself down as instructed. On
the other hand IF you pulled the power plug out of the wall, THEN you
stand the chance if mangling a file write and having a "dirty disk" that
requires CHKDSK to run. (Scandisk is ONLY in the "DOS" versions of
Windows, NOT the NT versions). IF you want to "kill" the "Power Key" by
software, then it will need to be reassigned in the Registry. Here are
two links to the information to allow you to change it.

You might first try searching online to see if a driver update for
your keyboard is available that does provide a disable power key
setting.

BTW, if you want to retain power ON capability from the keyboard, the
BIOS sometimes has a keyboard-combo setting you can define to enable
this (depending on your MB).
