Win2K server with SP4 and WinXP client

M

Maurice Bishop

Win XP Pro takes FOREVER to login.

Having entered username and password, the window 'Applying user settings...'
appears and sets there for 5 mins. Happens on all XP Pro clients.

Clients are all setup correctly - DHCP.

Active directory is working OK.

TIA

You need to make sure the XP clients are configured to use the DNS server
for the domain (one of the DCs running DNS) instead of the ISPs DNS server.
If your DHCP scope is passing out the ISP's DNS server you will need to
change this option in your scope.

9 times out of 10 (actually, probably closer to 9.997 times out of 10) if you take ages to prepare network connections and user settings on an AD system, the DNS is configured improperly for Active Directory.

In fact, 9 times out of 10, when ANYTHING goes wrong with an Active Directory system, it's a DNS problem. ;)
