For the last 4 days my Win2k server has been rebooting at
7:00pm sharp. When it does so, it doesn't leave a dump,
in fact it just black screens and the machine reboots.

If it's a virus/trojan NAV CE V8.1 w/ latest defs isn't
finding it.

Any ideas?

- Scan your PC with an external virus scanner,
e.g. on www.antivirus.com ("free online scan").
- Change your clock time in order to determine if the
event is caused by an internal or an external trigger.

Is there an event log entry from SAVEDUMP in the system event log?

Go to system control panel, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck auto
reboot.

These will allow you to determine if the machine is hitting a blue screen
crash.

Nope -- no savedump. The only thing in the log is that
the previous shutdown was unexpected. I've watched it
happen - doesn't even bluescreen, just blacks out &
reboots. I will try resetting clock and stop auto reboot.

Jim,

In my experience, a reboot without a blue screen is almost always caused by
hardware failure.

Although the fact that it happens at 7PM each day would suggest otherwise.

Hm. Is this machine running the latest BIOS?

-Matt

Yes. As a matter of fact, I just updated the BIOS (one
day after the 7pm reboot started) from A05 to A07
(obviously to no avail). It did it again tonite, even
after I shut off NAV rt virus protex.

if it's any consolation Jim, i've a few servers doing the
exact same thing. one reboots at 04:00 two days in a row,
no save dump, not set to "auto reboot", but does anyway,
but then it fixes itself, hasn't rebooted for two days in
a row, i haven't done a thing to it <yet>. i have
another, brand new HP machine, just reboot itself a couple
hours ago, same scenario.

will be keeping an eye on this post.... !
