Hi

My friend has a problem with a Windows 2000 Professional SP4 computer. It
has been running flawlessly for years, until 2 weeks ago. When he had
installed some post sp4-fixes from microsoft that then needed to be
uninstalled, due to other software in the machine that did not quite play
along. After the uninstall of these (SP5) fixes, the machine now takes about
15-20 minutes to get to the logon screen in win2k. After it has reached this
screen we press CTRL-ALT-DEL, and enter the password. Now the computer is
quiet for about 5 minutes after which it states:

"Could not log you on because the domain "ANALYS" is not available"
(note: this is a free translation from the swedish original message).

This computer has been on a local network, but no domain has ever been
present, nor has any of these settings been activated on the machine. There
is no textbox in which one can choose a domain, or local machine on the
logon-screen either.

So thats the current status, the machine can boot up and after a loong time,
i.e. 20 minutes you are told that one can not logon, due to the domain not
being present. After this it returns to the logon-screen.

I have also tried "Fail safe", with networking, without, commandprompt only.
Have also tried to disconnect network completely (the cable) and start, but
still same.

We have also tried to copy the file secedit.sdb from a healthy installation
to this machine, but its still the same problem.

Plz any ideas?

My friend is not a computer-savvy at all. So either he doesn't remember the
password for the local admin account, or simply has disabled it.

All the accounts he has had are local accounts, but that might not help?

Hi John John.

Unfortunatelly this wasn't a solution to the problem. :(
Although what you gave me probably worked great, it didn't make a
difference. The computer still takes a really loooong time to open. And then
still the same message that I can not login due to the missing domain
"ANALYS".

Any other ideas?

Probably to the point now where only an In-Place Upgrade (repair
reinstall) might fix the problem. If the user made Emergency Repair
Disks regularly he could try using the ERD and try repairing the SAM
database.
