win2k pro machine won't see new DVD writer

i've tried the jumpers in all positions, but the computer still does
not see the writer at all, neither in My Computer nor Device Manager.
Any ideas?

Try an 80 wire ribbon cable instead of the 40wire model.

have you set it on IDE 2 and set the IDE channel to auto instead of
disabled?
