win2k crashes, SP and new motherboard

B

Bob Fuller

I have installed new Biostar M7NCD motherboard and have reloaded win2k.
I load up the mb drivers and everything runs ok until I load all the
updates up and I load any of the service packs (it doesn't matter which
one, 1,2,3,or 4) the computer does the old blue screen of death on
bootup. I can get into safe mode and uninstall the service pack and all
is well. Obviously something in the service pack is blowing up the
system. Biostar so far has not answered my emails concerning the
problem. Any ideas or do I just run with vanilla win2k?
TIA,
disgruntled

I understand your frustrations, however this appears to be a hardware related issue. I would continue to persue this through the hardware manufaturer. You may need to be very persistant. I would call them directly. Emails are sometimes too easily overlooked.

As far as running Windows 2000 without any service packs, I do not recommend this as there have been too many known security issues with Windows 2000 since its release 3 years ago. That is a long time in computer years and too many malicious people have been attacking Microsoft products during that time period.

You might want to consider using a 3rd party firewall to secure your system until you can resolve your hardware issues and update your Windows 2000 system.

I would assume a newly manufactored MB is compatable with
W2k, but maybe not, run the hardware compatability utility
that's included on the install cd. I agree it sounds like
a hardware issue.

It is on the Win 2k CD. With the CD in the CD drive go to
start - run - and
type D:\winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly
