Win2K AS Hangs on Shutdown

B

Brian D. McGrew

Running on a Gateway server, when I shutdown or reboot the server, I hang
with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner. This makes it really
difficult to restart from remote! I've not been maintaining this server
very long, but since I have been maintaining it, this problem as always been
here. According to the previous maintainer, 'It never did that before!' ...
Uh hu, sure.

Anyway, I'm not usually a Windows guy but more of a Unix guy (can I say that
word here, Unix?) so any help in the right direction of troubleshooting this
should be great!

If you start the machine up in Safe Mode and then shut it down does it do
the same thing? If not, then there is a service or driver that loads in
Normal mode that doesn't load in Safe mode that is causing the problem.
You can make a list of services that are started in both modes to find the
differences then start disabling the suspect services in Normal mode one by
one until you find the culprit. Do the same thing for drivers by going
into Device Manager and showing all hidden devices using the View menu and
then looking under Non Plug and Play drivers .
