win2003 Server - screen saver prevents shutdown ?

(If there's a win2003 server newsgroup, please feel free to repoint
me).

I have win2003 server running quietly in a corner every day. It's most
always in "screen saver, monitor in energy save" mode. Its shut down
at night to save energy and for power safety reasons.

I typically (attempt to) shut down the machine at the end of the day
using the power off button. It works fine - unless the (MS supplied)
screen saver is running. If it is running, I have to move the mouse or
hit a keyboard key to clear it before windows will shut down. I don't
actually have to do anything... just "clear" the screen saver by
moving the mouse an inch. It definitely recognizes the request to shut
down - I can push power off and leave it sitting overnight - if I move
the mouse the next morning it will immediately display "windows is
shutting down" and it powers down. But, it is still up and running
until that mouse moves.

Any way to correct this? It's a problem since it will often not finish
the shutdown. It not only gets left up overnight, but if someone bumps
the mouse in the morning it goes right into shutdown.

Thanks,

Remove the screen saver.

You never said what kind of screen saver you have running. But I wouldn't be
surprised if it was one of the 3D screen savers.

One of the first things you learn in an IT server class is to NEVER use a
resource intensive screen saver on a server. Period.

By way of teaching the above, one of my instructors allowed us to monitor
the CPU of the server with a running 3D screen saver remotely. The CPU was
pegged at 100 percent. Not a good way for a server run. Imagine what that
does to the performance for the server's users.

Just get rid of the screen saver on the server.

set it to run with no screensaver and let the power options turn off the
screen?

Thanks, I will work some of these options and see what I can figure
out. I do want "password on resume" options i.e. idle system gets
password protected - so maybe I am tied to using a screen saver.
Perhaps without the screensaver without the power save option it will
work too. Since I use both, it could be either the SS or the PS that
is hanging the shutdown.

Time for more experimentation.
