Hello Kathy,
Windows 2000 does not have the "scandisk" in the same way that existed in
the Win9x versions of Windows. When you click in the error checking box
there in the GUI, it is actually running a read-only chkdsk. The chkdsk
command is what is used to check the validity and consistency of a drive /
partition. You can either run it in read-only mode (where it doesnt correct
any errors), or running chkdsk <drive letter :> /f which tells chkdsk to
correct any errors it finds.
How long have you let it sit at the 4 bars? Do you have any other drive
letters besides C:? If it does truly hang when you run the chkdsk, then
that suggests that there could be potentionally serious problems with the
drive.
