| is there some way to hide the windows 2000 desktop icons
| such as Outlook, Explorer, My Computer etc... without
| uninstalling the applications?
To remove all desktop icons, try the free Activicons utility from
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html (this option is on its
"Interface" screen).
If you do not want to remove all icons, You can hide most icons, such
as the Recycle Bin, by running TweakUI (download from Microsoft's
site).
TweakUI doesn't remove the "My Computer" icon, however. Here is the
way to remove this icon from the desktop without going to the
resource-hungry Web view:
1- rename the icon using Alt+0160 (or a combination of Alt+0160 and
spaces),
2- substitute a completely transparent icon for the default (in
Activicons, go to the "Desktop Icons" screen, click Change Icon and
select the blank icon from inside the Activicon.exe file),
3- either set the icon text box color to the same color as the
background, or use the Activicons utility to make it transparent (this
option is also on its "Interface" screen),
4- drag the now invisible icon to one of the screen edges (to keep it
from being clicked accidentally).
- return address is altered slightly to reduce spam.
