Hi,

Will the Backup utility that comes with win2000 backup everything?

What I would like to make sure of is that if my hard disk gets hit with a
hammer while it's spinning, that I can put a new, blank hard disk of the
same type, install Windows', restore my data, and everything will work - All
programs, etc..

Thanks,

Steve

It will not create an image if that's what you're looking for. In other
words, it's not going to back up your OS perfectly, if memory serves me
correctly, it will not backup open files (although their is a registry tweak
to enable this-although be forewarned it could corrupt the files) - You
should go with something like Drive Image Pro or Ghost, if you want to
create an exact copy of your computer.

Hope this helps..

In my experience, the Backup utility will not do everything you wnt -- or
at least it won't give you a backup that can be restored that easily. The
problem is that you have to install Windows in order to run the restore,
and once Windows is running, some files can't be replaced. Doing a
temporary install to an alternate partition and using that to restore your
backup will probably give you a completely restored system, but that's a
lot of hassle compared to doing an image restore that runs from some form
of DOS.

Close down all program - like close down the internet connection asnd
the firewall and virus scanner - look at crtl-alt-del to see what is
running and close it down. Then go and backup C: drive and make sure
that System Information is also backed up as well as System State at
the bottom of the choices - you will then have something which is
unbeatable by all the fancy programs - the sort of thing I come back
to when all else have failed which it often does. I have had bad
experience with Winbackup and also Acronis whereas MS backup has never
let me down.
