Old computer failure
Decided to buy a new computer
Need files off old Windows 98 hard disk
Took Win 98 hard drive out
It's FAT32 and 10GB hard drive
Set Jumper on hard drive is set as a slave
Connect old win 98 hard drive to new computer
running XP Home Edition & Start up computer
Did not auto-detect new hardware, but appears in Bios
Both drives set to Auto-detect
Hard drive does not show up in Explorer
Go to Settings=>Control Panel=>Administrative
Tools=>Computer Management
Storage=>Disk Management

Win98 Hard Drive listed by brand name,
but not assigned drive letter

Only option when I right click on the partition to
add is "Delete Partition"
what do I need to access this old hard drive?
Tried Cable Select,
but then XP refuses to see the old 98 disk.
suggestions?

I have the very same problem - slave disk is seen by disk management but not
accessible in explorer, and the only option for it is "delete partition" -
I'm still trying to get an answer to this - will let you know if I do.
Perhaps if you cure it you can mail me with the solution -
(e-mail address removed)

Cheers,
phil

I think the most likely is that its Hidden bit is set. To deal with
that I would use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35
shareware - 30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. Select the drive concerned on the left (probably HD1,
select the partition in the middle pane, click Properties. If there is
an UnHide button, click it, OK and Close, then reboot.

Try a rescan disks in disk amnager. (action, rescan ..)
Try right clcik on partition image of 98 disk pic showing space graph, and
assign a drive letter, check properties.

What did you orginally use to set up the 98 disk?
It may have bios software and that doesn't work on xp.

dumb down your primary IDE controller to pio mode to see it can be read.
(Hardware manage, disk conrolers, primary ...
