WIN XP will not start

Hi all.
I have a pc with the os preinstalled (god I hate that) and it didn't come with a recovery disk or cd with the os on it(win xp of course) and it will not start. The message I get is "the opperating system was not fully installed, please run set up"... and a box that sez "ok" that has to be clicked... all this does is reboot with the same screen/message. I've done an F8 on it at startup and tried to repair the preiviolus install... didn't work... even tried recovery to the last know configeration that worked...didn't work either... It keeps asking me to put the cd in and run setup.... but there is NONE!!! I went and got the "6 floppy disk recovery tool" from MS but when I use it... it tells me to finnish by putting the "WIN XP DISK IN !!!!!"..... so, what to do but load linex, or go buy the hole OS again on a disk...???

How long have you had this computer? I hope it's not too late to have the
vendor who sold it to you make it work right!

Can you tell us the brand and model of the computer? And/or the vendor who
sold it to you?

Get with Tech Support of the maker, and NICELY ask for a Recovery CD. If
tech support isn't authorized to send you what you need, get with Customer
Support. If Customer Support won't authorize sending a Recovery CD: If you
purchased the system with a credit card, NICELY mention that you don't
intend to be stuck with a heavy paperweight, and that you'll have to phone
your credit card company and have it handle the problem for you. Just the
mention of having the credit card company handle the situation usually
brings results. If it doesn't, phone the Customer Service number for your
credit card company and let them handle the problem for you. You'll either
get the CD, or the company will offer to swap the system, or they'll offer
to swap the hard drive with the preinstalled OS and software, or you'll get
a refund.

But, if you purchased the system from a store like Wal-Mart, ignore the
above, and deal with the store. A client purchased an HP system from
Walmart, which had a similar problem, and which didn't come with a recovery
CD. I phoned Wal-Mart for them, spoke with someone in the Computer Dept,
who offered to repair the system. I said that wasn't acceptable, because if
something similar happened again, there still wouldn't be any way to
recover. Even after 9 months, a FULL REFUND was given, and my client got a
better, loaded "advertised special" system from Dell, including the CDs, for
a few hundred dollars less. Hopefully you've backed up your data files.

FYI. If this is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion PC, click on
start>>Hewlett Packard>>Hewlett Packard tools>>Create CD
Recovery Disk. This feature works just fine.

WHEN it works. But, it's useless, if a file, or files, on the partition
with the recovery files are corrupt. Or, if you can't even boot into Normal
or Safe mode, one wouldn't be able to use the method that you suggest. When
HP decided to put the recovery files on the hard drive rather than shipping
an actual CD with the system, I put HP in the same category as Packard Bell,
the nadir of brand named PC systems. I just went to Packard Bell's web
site, and it looks like since the class action law suits, North America is
no longer a PB market, just South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
Geez how much does a recovery CD cost a PC manufacturer?
