I just upgraded from Win98 SE to Win XP Home Edition and
I'm having difficulty connecting to the internet. I'm
using a US Robotics V.92 Performance Pro Modem on Com Port
5 and from the Modem it seems to be working fine. When I
query the modem it comes back all green lights. I then set
up my network connection via dial up using the wizard.
When I click on my ISP short cut I get error 631
incompatible user name and password. So I went into
control panel and and checked Internet Options and noticed
the password I inserted has been deleted by XP and had
installed its own password. I deleted XP's generated
password and reinstalled mine clicked Ok and reopened
Internet Options and low and behold XP removed my password
and reinstalled its own. I then went to account management
and deleted all passwords from the system and it does not
matter the same thing happens over and over. The only way I
can connect to the internet is by manually changing the
password when the modem dial up screen comes up. How do I
fix this problem because it will not let me connect to the
internet at all, even after I manually connect with the
modem to my ISP. Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated, Thank you

Randy,

have tried deleting your dialup connection and recreating a new one ?

Haggis,
Yes, I went so far as to remove the modem and reinstalled
it and deleted all my internet connections and reinstalled
and this crazy password keeps self propagating itself.
This is on an AMD K-7 motherboard, 2.5Ghz CPU, 512megs RAM,
that I built myself. I partitioned and reformatted the
hardrive so I started the install from a very clean slate.
This is so frustrating because I don't know where to go to
next within the bowels of XP to find that one little check
mark that is repeatedly doing this. Thanks for you quick
response.

Randy,

just for fun, try once to let it connect with the false
password. Just click on OK.
