Win XP update problem

I got a notice on my laptop last night that an update was ready to install
and that it would install automatically when I turned it off. Well, of
course I eventually turned it off and for an hour or so last night the
message on the screen alternated between 'Installing Update 1 Of 1' and
'Don't turn off your computer, it will shut down by itself' so I went to
bed.
It's still going on this AM.

Any suggestions?

I would install the update manually from the Windows Update site.
