Win XP SP2 Network issue after UPG

He all

I just upgraded a Sony Viao from WinME to WinXP now I have no netwrorking :(

Here's some facts

Setup

PC> router> cable modem

The router and cables have been replaced
The network adapter drivers have been deleted and reinstalled
I have tried netsh init ip reset to reset TCP/IP

In all cases I am unable to get an IP adress from thr router ..however I
dont think the DHCP request ever makes it that far

In tracing the prob I came across this wierd symptom

ping 127 .0.0.0.1 should give me 'pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data
... blah blah blah" . In my case it says 'pinging °Y with 32 bytes of
data'... the rest is normal and the ping requests work.. but I'm not sure
really what it means to me...

I have rebuilt the HOSTS file - no effect

Anyone have any ideas??????

Thx Bob

Some of these may seem pretty lame but here goes anyway.

Does the router led light up when you plug in your network cable?
Do you have the latest router bios installed?
Do you have latest drivers for network card?
Is your network card on the mb? Is it enabled in the cmos setup?
Did you try another network card?
Did you try reseting router to default factory settings?
If using a network card, do led's light up?
Can you ping yourself, can you ping the router?
Can others ping you by computer name or ip?
Have you tried fixed ip address?
Control panel, Firewall, exceptions: is file and printer sharing checked?

Go to properties of your network connection. Are the following installed and
checked:

File and printer sharing for MS networks.
Client for MS networks.
TCP/IP
QoS Packet Scheduler

Any warnings in Device Manager?

Your DNS fails: restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD,
then at that prompt type: IPCONFIG /flushDNS and then : IPCONFIG
/registerDNS

(before and after this procedure, find out:)
What report are you getting from IPCONFIG?
Is there a Default Gateway? Is it the router address?
